Why does packing for a trip have to be so tedious?

So this will be a short one, I'm leaving for Disney World tomorrow! I'm quite excited, I have never been there before. I'm going with my cousins, two of which are 4 and 8 years old. I can't wait to see the looks on their faces when we get there!

Now on to an update! I started classes this week, but I was only able to attend one of them. Classes were canceled on Tuesday due to a really bad snow storm. That wasn't really anything to worry about since my professor had already canceled class two days before.

The class I was able to attend was my Teaching Young Adult Literature in Multicultural Settings, it was so much fun! We are going to be learning different techniques to get our future students reading books and enjoying the process. Our first assignment was to create a "wonder notebook" which is going to be the writing space that we use to write down our thoughts on our class readings as well as writing down our Reader's Autobiography, which I am quite excited to write! I will probably post it here once I get it finished.

Other than the wonder notebooks, we also discussed Literature Circles. We will be doing 7 of them this semester, each of them revolving around a specific kind of YA book. The first two books we are doing are "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse and "Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes" by Chris Crutcher. I haven't read either of these, but they sound pretty good. I'll be sure to say whether or not they are worth reading once I finish them.

I'm really looking forward to this class and my other two classes which I will attend not next week but the week after.

My next update will be all about Disney!

Until then...

Young Adult Fiction, why I love it and want to teach it

Yay! First late blog post, I knew it would happen eventually. I'm thinking that Wednesdays were not that good of a choice when it came to picking a posting day. I'm thinking that if I post at least once a week, I'll still be making my goal. (my weeks usually start on Mondays :P)

So, I just finished the "Divergent" Series by Veronica Roth. They were very good and followed in the footsteps of other dystopian young adult (YA) greats such as "The Hunger Games" and "The Giver". I am a big fan of dystopian fiction, there is something so intriguing about reading stories where people believe they can make people behave and act a certain way to bring about peace within a community. The issue with this is that it never works.

Divergent takes this idea very literally. The main character, Beatrice Prior (later known as Tris) lives in a world, that is split into factions. Each faction values a certain characteristic. She was born into the faction Abnegation, which values selflessness. Each faction is responsible for certain jobs within the city based on their values and strengths.

This is a very interesting world, that becomes even more intriguing once we find the reasons for the factions and how the world became like it is to Tris and the others.

At the age of 16, those that are born into factions, take a test that tells them where they belong based on how they react to a simulation. They are given a choice to stay in the faction they were born in, or switch to one of the others. The main character Tris, never felt selfless enough to truly belong in Abnegation. She liked the idea of being brave like the Dauntless, and knew she was not fit for Candor (the honest) or Amity (the peaceful). Erudite (The intelligent) was her other choice, but with the way her father spoke of this faction, she did not want to join it, nor did she think she was smart enough.

She eventually does choose and her world gets turned upside down, which leads to an ending that I was NOT expecting.

Now I am getting into Spoiler territory. If you wish to not be spoiled, please scroll until you see a picture of an adorable doggy with a smile on his face.

Okay. if you are still with me, I'm assuming you have completed the series (YAY!) or don't plan on reading it but are intrigued.

Oh the ending. The ending of this series was heartbreaking and unexpected and I honestly did not know how to feel about it. I was angry for one, but insanely curious at the motive. This was the first YA novel I've read where the MAIN CHARACTER, yes, TRIS, dies at the end.

She doesn't die like Harry, where she goes and has a long talk with a mentor and then chooses to live. She doesn't die and become a vampire like Bella. She dies. She gets shot and she dies. Simple as that, but NOT simple as that. SHE DIES! Who kills the main character? Veronica Roth, that's who.

I'm getting all worked up again as I write this. I love happy endings. I love when the main couple lives happily ever after and manages to bring peace to the universe they live in. This was not the case in in final book of "Divergent" Tris died and in doing so, she changed her whole world and society and allowed them to start from the beginning and rebuild. She gave all of her friends a second chance.

I did not feel good about this ending until I read a blog post by the other herself, which can be found here:

She speaks of being true to Tris' character. She said she did everything she could to save Tris, but in the end, she allowed Tris to do what she had to do. I love this idea. I love the fact that the author wrote the book she wanted to write and allowed the characters the freedom to make their own choices. Even though I am still in shock over this ending and I don't think I will ever get over it, I am still insanely impressed and I hope other authors follow in Roth's footsteps and use this idea to bring a bit more reality to the future of YA stories and characters.

END SPOILERS

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. Because they were holding on to something... That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it's worth fighting for." - Sam Gamgee (The Lord of the Rings)

This is one of of my favorite quotes because it can be applied to many books. This is the first thing I thought of when I was trying to get over the shock of the end of "Allegiant".

One of the reasons why I want to teach English, is that I want to instill a love of reading into my students. I have always loved to read, I can thank my parents and many wonderful teachers for instilling this love into me. I want to do the same for my future students.

Books can provide role models, a means of escape and they can be teachers themselves. The recent trend in dystopian fiction seems to tell us that our world doesn't feel right and we need to do something about it. I think writing these stories and teaching them to a younger generation is a fantastic idea. Tris and Katniss show traits of selflessness, bravery, love, loyalty and goodness. They also have rebellious streaks in them, they do dangerous things without thinking. They learn from their mistakes. Having children read about them will let them know that they too can change the world. No matter where you come from, as long as you care for others and be a good person you will succeed. Now, Divergent does give mixed feelings on that last part, BUT, that is spoiler territory, so I will not elaborate.

This post was a bit all over the place. I had started writing it last Tuesday and I got caught up in the whirlwind of life. Hopefully next week's post will be better.

I know it will be since next week is the first week of classes!

I am excited to share my first week of grad school with you all.

Until then.... Do some reading and remember:

“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only once.” - Jojen (A Dance with Dragons)

Mirrors, Movies, and Frozen Temps, that's what my week was made of...

So it seems like I am off to a bad start when it comes to some of my goals, I gained two pounds and did not bother going to the gym due to how cold it was and my laziness due to the cold weather.

On the other hand, I have finished ONE book so far and I have seen two movies. So those goals are moving along nicely.

I finished Insurgent, the second book in the Divergent series and I was quite pleased with it, even though the beginning was a bit slow. I was so distraught by the ending that I wanted to immediately run home so I could begin Allegiant.

Instead I went and saw Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones with my dad. Now I went into this film with very low expectations. The fourth film was so bad that when I first went to watch it, I couldn't finish it. I made myself watch it over the weekend, because I knew I would be see The Marked Ones this week.

I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It was really good. Right away you are pulled into the lives of the characters and they are so personable. They felt like real people. This made the conflict they had to go through feel very real. This film is definitely NOT a stand alone and must be seen after the first four films. Yes, even the terrible fourth film, which actually made a bit more sense after seeing this one. The first film and the third film are very important to this one, so if you want to understand certain things, those two are a MUST before you see this one.

The ending of this movie blew my mind. It made the mythology and the story that has been going along in all of these movies come full circle but still left me with so many questions. I read that the filmmakers are planning the release of Paranormal Activity 5, later this year, which makes me believe that The Marked Ones was sort of an interlude to the central story which revolves around Katie, the woman from the first film.

I give The Marked Ones an 8 out of 10. It was worth seeing, but I think you could wait until it comes out on DVD and just marathon them all, I think I may do that.

Now the other movie I saw was Frozen. The new Disney film. I absolutely loved it. The characters and the the music, it was amazing. It was nice to see a movie where the main theme wasn't true love between a prince and and princess, but that it was love between two sisters. It was a very touching movie and I highly recommend it! 10 out of 10.

So other than finishing a book, seeing two movies and not exercising, I spent a lot of time in my house, playing The Old Republic and watching TV with Preston. It is nice having days off and nothing to do. It was also freezing. I believe that it got to be 8 degrees here in Northern Virginia and I am NOT a fan of being cold.

It didn't help that a few days before we were supposed to have temperatures down in the single digits that someone decided to hit my driver's side mirror and completely ruin it.

I love my car, I was devastated when this happened because: A) I had no idea how much it was going to cost and B) I couldn't drive it, which meant I had to find rides to work.

Thankfully I was told it was quite easy to fix a mirror, so I found a replacement on Amazon for about $50 and got cheap one day shipping through Amazon Prime.

As soon as the mirror came in the mail, I bundled up and went outside to replace it myself. Part of me was excited to be able to do something like this on my own.

I educated myself with a youtube video, grabbed my dad's tool box and headed out the door.

It was VERY easy to do, I only needed to call my dad to help me hold the new mirror while I put in the screws. I was very pleased with myself.

Now I was a little upset that I had to buy a mirror that was a different color than my car, but it grew on me, I like how it is mismatched. :)

It was very stressful having to deal with this, but in the end, I only spent $50 and I got some experience fixing something on my own, it felt really good.

Well I think I have covered everything for this week. Back to work tomorrow and the next day. Hopefully I'll have more exciting things to post about next week.

New Year, New Blog, First Post

So I tried keeping a blog last year, but I did not keep up with it. I am hoping this year to actually keep up and create an outlet for myself.

This will be a personal blog. I will share stories and thoughts and feelings on subjects that mean something to me.

I am 26 years old and a recent graduate from George Mason University. My bachelor's degree is in English and my career goal is to be a middle-school English teacher.

I was accepted in the Education Master's program at George Mason and will be continuing my studies later this month. That is why I chose the name "Adventures in Teachery" :)

The main goal of this blog will be an outlet for me to get things off my chest and to keep me motivated. I have twenty goals I wish to accomplish this year. I'm not a big fan of the whole resolution thing. I feel as though in recent years, they have been made to be broken. I like the idea of having goals. It makes me feel like I have a plan to follow.

Goals for 2014
1. Read 27 books
2. See 50 movies
3. Lose 80 pounds
4. Get on a budget and STAY on budget
5. Take more pictures
6. Cook and bake more
7. Do well in school
8. Level up Holden to 55
9. Go on a road trip
10. Get a passport
11. Make friends at school
12. Apply to substitute teach and tutor
13. Write more
14. Watch more horror movies
15. Organize my closet
16. Be more confident
17. Love myself more
18. Get more sleep
19. Go out dancing
20. Get dressed up and go somewhere fancy

Some of these goals seem a little silly, like #8 and #11 but they are just as important as goals like #3, #7 and #16. (Holden is one of my characters in the game Star Wars: The Old Republic, things WILL get a little geeky around here)

A blog specific goal is to post every Wednesday. Even if I don't have much to say, I still want to stay on that schedule. It will keep me on track.

Well, if you have stuck with this post so far, thanks for reading and I hope to keep you entertained :D
